Art Spiegelman was born on February 15, 1948 in Stockholm, Sweden but grew up in New York City. He pursued a career as an artist and attended SUNY Binghamton but left before completing his degree. After leaving college, he contributed heavily to underground comics, or comix. It was at this time that he published an early iteration of Maus that appeared in another cartoonist's anthology.
As his career progressed, Spiegelman cofounded Raw in 1980 with his wife, and together they published comics in an attempt to engage a wider audience. He continued to develop the Maus story in Raw. The Maus book was first published in 1986.
