Reserves Collection at SLLC: FAQs

A description of the reserves collection, including the Library-Provost Textbook Reserves and equipment reserves, at SLLC.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if SLLC has the textbook I need on reserve?

You can use Roosearch, SLLC's integrated search tool, to find out if SLLC has the book you need in print or as an e-textbook. Using the Course Reserves search, look up your course by typing its number (e.g. MATH 121), the name of your professor, or the title of the course (e.g. College Algebra). If needed, you can use the facets that appear on the left to narrow your search.

If the book is available in print, you will see "Available at SUNY Canton Library Reserves - Circulation Desk" on the item record:

A Primo search for MATH 121 returns an item record for a textbook called Algebra and Trigonometry. It displays a status of Available at SUNY Canton Library Reserves - Circulation Desk

If the book is available as an e-textbook, you will see "Available Online" on the item record:

A Primo search for ENGL 307 returns an item record for a textbook called Giovanni's Room. It displays a status of Available Online.

How can I borrow a textbook from the reserves collection?

Only SUNY Canton students and faculty may borrow textbooks from the reserves collection. You'll need to know the complete title of the textbook. Give this information to staff at the front desk, along with your student ID, to borrow a textbook.

How long can I borrow a textbook from the reserves collection?

Reserves textbooks are available for checkout for two hours at a time. Reserves textbooks must not leave the library and cannot be borrowed overnight.

What happens if I decide to keep a reserves textbook past the due date?

If you borrow a reserves textbook past the due date, your borrowing privileges may be blocked (you will not be able to borrow any more library materials) until you return the book. If you frequently keep books past the due date or remove them from the library, you may lose your reserves borrowing privileges permanently.

It's important that you don't allow anyone else to use your ID or account because you are liable for any items checked out in your name. If a library item is not returned, you will be charged the full replacement value of the item plus a processing fee.

How can I request that the library purchase my textbook for the reserves collection?

The reserves librarian selects books for purchase based on many factors, including the course enrollment, modality, and textbook cost. If you feel the library should purchase your course's textbook, please submit a request through our purchase request form here

Can I donate my textbook to the library?

Yes! The library welcomes all donations of textbooks. Many of the books in the current collection are donations from your classmates and professors. If you'd like to donate a textbook, please drop it off at the circulation desk. Note that donated textbooks become property of SLLC. Thank you!
